Petula Clark wins a golden disc with "Down Town
Petula Clark--the British child star who went to Paris, married a Frenchman and became a sophisticated singer and recording star--has won a golden disc for her record "Down Town," (sic) which sold over 1,000,000 copies.
Petula, who is 30, was the first British girl to reach the top of the American 'hit parade' in 12 years; and she was second in the British 'hit parade'.
She was presented with the golden disc in London last night. And she announced her plans to appear in cabaret in the autumn at a London night-spoot. This would change the image her British fans have kept of Petula as a "little girl next door". But, she says: "It will give my fans the chance of seeing a different aspect of me."
